It Actually Snowed

A blizzard advisory issued for the area didn't really phase us. Most of the time when there is talk of a big snow storm it ends up being next to nothing. This one was for real. The weather channel says Brooklyn got 24 inches. 

 I ventured out this morning and walked across the street (8th ave) to the store. Because of the winds we had there are huge drifts (see picture of our backyard below) and on the far side of the avenue the snow was up to my butt.

Charles isn't sure what to think of all the white stuff outside but he liked watching Dada, Gloria, and Jorge shovel the steps and sidewalk this morning. 

We had been planning to go to Baby's R Us after church yesterday to buy a new car seat and some snow boots for Charles. Church was a combined service yesterday, english and chinese congregations, and we had a pot luck afterwards. If we had left right away and hadn't stayed for the meal we would probably have been fine- the wind was fierce but the snow was just a flurry/dusting. We could have gone right after the potluck but thought 'it probably wont be that bad, we'll just go tomorrow'. ha. Also, with the snow we thought it would be hard to find a parking spot once we got back and although we didn't think much of driving in the snow, we knew that other people on the road don't come from a place where this is normal winter weather so, we stayed home.
Later that evening as the storm got worse Chris got a call from his boss telling him not to come in tomorrow because if the snow. Today- we are definitely not going to Baby's R Us, or anywhere for that matter. We don't have boots for Charles to go out and play in the snow but we might be able to use his friend Hailey's rain boots.

Things We Have Found in the Garbage

Charles has become quite the little helper. With a little direction from us he can help put his blocks and books away as well as set things back on the coffee table or counter. He also loves putting things in the garbage can. If he sees a piece of paper or something on the floor, he will bring it to the garbage. This is a step in the right direction as he also likes taking things out of the garbage. The first time I saw him throw something away was when I had given him a snack of pureed fruit that comes in a pouch that he can squeeze to get the stuff out. We were in the kitchen and I was doing the dishes or something and he went over to the garbage can and as I was about to say something like 'no Charles, don't touch the garbage' he lifted the top, dropped his empty pouch, and shut the lid. However, our little helper also likes to throw things in the garbage that don't need to be thrown away.

Every morning, before we get him out of bed, he throws is teddy bear into the can next to his crib. Depending on the morning and how long WE want to stay in bed, this may happen over and over again. He'll drop his bear into the garbage and then say "buh-buh, buh-buh", sign 'bear' and point down to the bear until we get up, pick up the bear and give it back to him. Maybe this is his way of getting us out of bed??

We have decided to get a smaller garbage can for the kitchen that will go in the cabinet under the sink.

Getting Ready for Christmas

Christmas is just around the corner and if you are like us your holiday activities have already started. Parties, dinners, shopping, decorating.. Christmas time is wonderful isn't it?

On Friday I got together with a friend who recently visited our friends in Norway and she brought back a beautiful advent star to hang in our window. It was the perfect reason to decorate for Christmas. It's so pretty all lit up and glowing! 

On Saturday we went caroling with a group from church. We walked up and down busy 8th avenue singing Christmas songs, it was so fun! First we walked down the avenue and made a stop on 49th street in front of Dominick's Pizzeria. (If you have ever been to NYC for BUMP or to visit us, you have most likely eaten  Dominick's) One of the guys who works there came out and took video of us singing. 

Then we crossed the street and walked and sang all the way to the train station at 62nd street. We stopped in front of the station and sang a few more songs, crossed the street and headed back towards church..

Making one more stop along the way at a Malaysian restaurant whose owner started coming to the Chinese service and became a believer. In our caroling group we had people singing in english, chinese and gujarati so when we stopped at the restaurant those singing in chinese did a few song alone. 

Then we headed back to church for refreshments and to warm up.

Over the weekend I also got two more onesies made. I have been trying to get some ready and in stock for my etsy shop. I want some ready to sell because even though I have made quite a few over the last year almost all of them have been gifts. The following are the first two of four from my up and coming 'woodland collection'. I'm excited about it :)

Oh, and it snowed.

Betsy's Visit

 It was SO fun to have my sister here for a long visit. I miss her already. We had some really good sister bonding time which as so good. As we have gotten older we have become much closer and although we live far apart we are still able to be there for each other.

For my birthday we went and got our nails done in the morning and then went to the staff Thanksgiving lunch at church. Chris had to work that evening so it was just us and Charles. We went to the Park and she sat with Charles in the cafe while I went for a birthday run. I am SO thankful for that!  Afterwards, we stopped at the Tea Lounge and got some of my favorite red velvet cake to bring home with us. Good thing I ran! 

After putting Charles to bed we made some chai tea, and watched a movie while eating our goodies. As a surprise Chris got off early and brought home cupcakes from Crumbs. Another favorite :)

We saved the cupcakes for another night, however.

Betz brought with her some stuff to make a special beer bread which we baked together. Its was pretty good but the snickerdoodle cheese ball we make was even better! We did a lot of baking/cooking together. Even if most of it was me, she still helped a TON by watching Charles while I was working in the kitchen- especially on Thanksgiving morning while I baked two pies and PW's Corn and Wild Rice Casserole, which has become tradition. (If you have never had it, make it! It will change your life.) Chris made sweet potatoes, his specialty, and everything was a hit. We had so much good food on Thanksgiving! 

Charles sure enjoyed having Auntie Betsy here too. Every morning he would run into the living room and wake her up. They read together and colored and sang. She definitely kept up her daycare skills while she was here! She is a great Auntie and I wish we weren't so far away so that Charles could spend more time with her (and his grandparents and uncle).  We sure are thankful for the technology (although frustrating at times) we have though so that we can skype and share photos via email and facebook. 

I am very thankful for my sister. Isn't she pretty?
