FINALLY!

I don't know if any of you pay attention to my "what I'm reading" sidebar but if you have you will know that it hasn't changed in a looong time. This isn't because I haven't been reading anything but because google told me that my space for uploading photos had reached it's limit (???) and would no longer allow me to upload images from my computer. I had tried in vain to put the photos on there using their URL and that didn't work either.. or more likely I wasn't doing it correctly because I just decided to give it another go, determined to be smarter than the computer and.. success! yea! Now I can keep updating my book list!

I can't remember all the books I have read since the last time I was able to update it but the most recent ones were The Help by Kathryn Stockett,  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows (I would highly recommend them both) and Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly (#931).

FINALLY!

If any of you pay attention to my reading list on the side bar you will be happy to note that I have FINALLY moved on from Lolita. A book that has taken me over a year to finish. Yes. Over a year. I started it shortly before giving birth and since then have struggled to read it. Not struggled reading it, but wanting to read it. Not to say it is a bad book, some parts are beautifully written, the subject matter, however, is not what I would call 'desirable'. I knew a little of what I was getting into prior to starting the book having interpreted two english classes that had been required to read it, and seen clips of the film. Actually reading it is obviously different that simply being audience to discussion about it. I think it wouldn't have been as big of a deal if I didn't have a baby after starting it- reading the inner thoughts of a grown man and his feelings towards/actions with a twelve year old girl was not what I wanted to spend my time doing, especially having just become a mother. Not to mention the mere issue of having the time for myself to sit and read.
Others tried to persuade me to forget the book and just start another. This, I can not do. I don't like not finishing a book nor do I favor reading more than one book at a time. So.. a year has gone by and I finally trudged my way through the last 80 or so pages and now I am done.
done. done. done.
For those of you who want to read Lolita, or will eventually be reading it as you continue your own quest through The List, please don't let my own experience sway you or give you a bias. I am certain if I had started it earlier or waited I would not have taken so long to get through it. Sitting down at home to read a book just hasn't been one of my top priorities over the last year. I often read on the train going to and from work but work has been very part time since becoming a mother and when I first started up again I was too tired to read on the train anyway!
All this to say.. I have finished Lolita. Finally. :)

Fishy smell and Jane Austin

I got off work early yesterday because the student in my last class of the day couldn't make it. (no complaint here) I had been planning on going to the gym on my way home from work but due to an unfortunate accident involving my left over lunch from last Friday- consisting of salmon and rice- being left in my gym bag over the weekend all my clothes smelled like fish. I noticed this as I was walking to the train yesterday morning with Chris. Something smelled weird when I picked up my bag on our way out the door but he said he didn't smell anything so I thought it was just me. As we were walking I could still smell it.. and when I heard the rustling of a paper bag as I walked I then remembered what I had left in my bag. I threw it out right away, but of course the smell remained. Later when I about to leave I checked my clothes again and decided that I would be too embarrassed to work out smelling like fish. So, I passed the gym and walked home.
I arrived home two hours earlier than I usually do and Chris wouldn't be home for another 2 1/2 hours. Should I take a nap? Read a book? OH! I remembered that last week we got 'Becoming Jane' from Netflix. This isn't a movie that my husband is interested in seeing so I decided to watch it. Oh goodness, it was SO GOOD! I wanted to read Pride and Prejudice right then and there. Which leads me to explain something. About a year and a half ago, maybe more, I joined my two best friends on a quest to read all the reccommended books on the list of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. This is a big task, I realize, but it's pretty fun too. I have swayed from the list a few times and read something that wasn't on it, but for the most part I have been reading book after book from the list. And I have enjoyed all of them so far. I just started Beloved, by Toni Morrison a few days ago and because I don't like reading more than one book at a time I will wait until I am finished to start Pride and Prejudice, and I am really excited. Jessica has been in Jane Austin land for a while now and I have been encouraging her to break free and read Margaret Atwood (I highly reccommend The Handmaiden's Tale) but she is sticking with it. Now, I might just enter this romantic land too.

Every Day Should Be Saturday

Perfect Saturday morning? Getting a great hair cut at my salon, Il Camelion in Park Slope, followed by browsing through a cute kitchen store (and having to tear myself away before I bought everything inside) and then finding a perfect card to send to a friend at a paper shop. After that? Sitting at Connecticut Muffin as it drizzles rain outside, sipping my iced chai latte and reading my current 'list' book, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. 

Chris and I spent the afternoon inside relaxing and then went to the grocery store and bought stuff for dinner.. crab legs! What?! It was raining all day, we had nothing else to do.. why not make crab legs for dinner and watch a movie?

Because I Want To, That's Why

I have decided that I am leaving work early today. Usually on Tuesdays I am interpreting an english class right now, from 1-3:30. Today I had to go with a student to the financial aid department at 1:00 and so my team interpreter was alone for the first 20 minutes of class- no big deal however because it's a literature and film class and today they are watching the film Lolita*, after reading the book the last two weeks. Anyway.. she said she was fine alone- all they are doing is watching the movie anyway- (and I have already seen Lolita since I interpreted the very same class for another student a year ago) so I was free to take care of a few things. Well, I have taken care of them. I am done. Usually on Tuesdays I come back to the office and stay until 5 to get things done or to be available if a student needs me.. well I have decided that I am going home now. Early. I got my things done, I don't expect anyone to need me between 3:30 and 5 and so I am leaving. So there. Whatcha gonna do 'bout it?




* For those of you who read this blog and know about 'The List', Lolita is on it! I have only read parts of the book, from interpreting the class, but I have seen both versions of the movie. Pretty good. The story is a little disturbing: young girl, older man etc.. very controversal. I guess it was banned from being read in some schools, but apparently it was beautifully written.
